Memories of the late GWR works came flooding back to rail enthusiasts
last month as a steam engine built in the Swindon works in 1949, the last

Scrapped in 1964 to an engine graveyard in Bar ry, South Wales,
enthusiasts painstakingly restored it in a workshop in one of the old
railway works buildings. The Southall Railway Society, which paid the
£200,000 cost of restoration, own the engine which was the one
hundredth to be salvaged from the scrapyard. It will undertake running
trials on the Swindon and Cricklade railway for about three months.
The Mayors of Swindon and Southall will view the loco on Saturday
SARACEN 25th at Blunsdon Station and the public have the opportunity to ride in
carriages pulled by it on Sunday 26 March from 11am.
