   need to plan now to ensure that
   the children of the future have the
   opportunity to experience a Swin-
   don as rich in wildlife as the one
   we have today — or even more so.
     A steering group composed of
   community groups, councillors
   and council officers, conservation-
   ists and members of Local Agenda
   21 are working together over the
   next few months to harness enthu-
   siasm for the project. The work
   will then be taken forward by a
   broad coalition involving the peo-
   ple of Swindon at every level -
   community groups, businesses,
   landowners and individuals.
     A number of events are being
   organised to introduce you to, or
   raise awareness of Swindon's
   WOW factor. We're also keen to
   hear from community groups who
   would like an event tailored spe-
   cifically to their needs. Alterna-
   tively you can have your say by
   requesting a questionnaire.
     To put some WOW into your
   life, call Neil Pullen on 526228,
   mail: [email protected],
   or take part in one of the following
   events in December:
   Sunday 1st: Hedgerow survey
   training day, Highworth;
   Tuesday 3rd: Swindon Celebrates
   — see page 3;
   Sunday 8th: Christmas task at Avis
   Meadows;
   Wednesday 11th: Quiz and raffle
   at Fusion, Old Town;
   Sunday 15th: Open day at Twigs -

     Award for citizen of
       the environment
   Is there someone in your commu-
   nity that you feel makes an out-
   standing contribution to Swin-
   don's environment?
   Maybe they are someone that:
   • Is recycling crazy?
   • Takes part in conservation
     activities?
   • Plants trees and flowers?
   • Cares & protects local wildlife?
     Then nominate them for the
   Swindon Council Citizen Award.
     The Mayor coun Stan Pajak, the
   deputy mayor Derek Benfield and
   last year's mayor David Cox are
   looking for people who are com-
   mitted to making Swindon a bet-
   ter place for people and wildlife.
     Nominations should be for peo-
   ple who were born, live or work in
   Swindon. The closing date is 27
   December.
     For details contact the mayor's
   secretary Carole Deamer at the
   Civic Offices, Euclid Street, Swin-
   don, SN1 2JH or mail: mayor@
