Post office plan goes through
Swindon Council's planning committee has passed plans by Tesco to
... "kgood... extend its Shaw Village Centre shop to accommodate both the com-
pany's expansion plans and the existing post office.
Shaw residents rose up in April and May to protest against Tesco's
proposals to close the post office. A 2,500 name petition and a picket of
the Tesco superstore in Ocotal Way encouraged the company to recon-
sider its moves, whilst pressure in the background from local council-
cowA2 lors and South Swindon MP Julia Drown helped ram the negative
community relations message home.
\-\e Ye George Tweed Gardens sheltered flats' resident Jean Waller was
SUtMw^Y delighted when Julia rang her. "It's excellent news, we're all delighted
that Tesco saw sense in our demands and changed its mind. There were
Tleat yourself at Secrets Boay times I thought we would not win, but our loud protests were heard."
Now Jean and fellow protestors will be battling to preserve the open

space adjacent to George Tweed Gardens. See the story on page 8.
