LETS to start trading at Forest Festival
A new system of trading services and goods will be launched at the
Forest Festival on The Lawn, Old Town on 2 September.
The idea is that people can offer their skills and talents, trade
produce or unwanted gifts without any money changing hands. Mem-
bers of the local exchange trading system or LETS, earn or spend
notional units of alternative currency instead of cash. Each LETS unit
is considered to be worth about £1.
Upon joining, everyone completes a form specifying what they have
to offer and making requests for things they need. To date services
vary from head massage and gardening advice, to IT skills and sewing
alterations and there have been requests for help with housework,
ironing and haircuts.
Discover how it works and meet the founder members at the Forest
Festival (see page 38). They are running a competition to find a name
for Swindon LETS units. If you can't make it to the festival, go to: me Midcoumies eo-operative
