Q: Q: Q: What are ‘Payments on Account’ and why must I pay
them to HMRC in January and July?

A:A:A: Usually, Income Tax (not PAYE) is paid 31 January. For
income over £1,000 HMRC ‘assume’ that next year you will
earn the same and ask for 2 payments of 50% in advance in
January and July. These are Payments on Account (POA).
             Example:
Jan. 2012: Jim’s 2010/11 tax bill was £1,000. But he had to
pay £1,500 because a ‘POA’ of 50% was requested toward
next year’s bill which HMRC ‘estimated’ to be £1,000. © Images are distributed under licence from W. Moorcroft Ltd.
July 2012: Jim pays the second POA of £500.
Jan. 2013: Jim’s Tax bill for 2011/12 is actually £1,200. The
POAs totalling £1,000 are deducted, leaving £200. Add to this To celebrate the
the new POA of £600 (50% of £1,200) and he owes £800. Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
July 2013: Jim pays the second 50% POA of £600.…. by Nicola Slaney.
You can reduce POA’s in your Tax Return, or a claim form, if R.R.P. £465
you think your actual Tax will be less than the estimate. Items featured subject to stock availability
