Books more than fun dressing up day
Link magazine’s annual invitation to cover Brook Field Primary
School’s celebration of World Book Day on 5 April did not
disappoint.
Everybody came to school dressed as their favourite charac-
ter, and staff once again led the way in creativity. However the
day was very much a learning experience with Year 2 writing
book reviews, Year 3 dressing up as characters from the Wizard
of Oz and discussing the moral of the story and Year 4 crafting
origami books.
Year 5 children studied the Chinese Willow Pattern story as
part of the ancient civilisations curriculum module and Year 6
spent the day in a workshop bringing Shakespeare to life.
Deputy headteacher Rachael Taylor said: “We always have
a great time but we plan it with a clear educational purpose.
Each class also enjoyed unwrapping boxes of new books which
had been purchased by the Friends of Brook Field. It was like
Christmas had come again.”
Former student unveils disability support centre
Paralympian tennis player Louise Hunt paid a visit to her former school to open
‘The Hub’ on Monday 9 March.
Commonweal School now provides more places for students with physical
difficulties than ever, due to a recent expansion and renovation of its specialist
provision. The facility provides the right environment for some 65 learners with
a variety of needs, enabling them to achieve their potential with support from
experienced professionals.
The demand for extra space has come from an increase of children with
physical impairments within the town over the past few years. Funding from
Swindon Council now enables more pupils to receive specialist education in the
town rather than seeking support and resources outside the borough.
Louise talked to students about her experiences since leaving Commonweal,
including being a member of the Great Britain tennis squad at the Paralympic
Games in London in 2012 and her hopes to qualify for the games in Rio de
Janeiro in 2016.
