                                                                                How does gift aid work?


                                                               Gift Aid is a way to increase the value of a charitable
                                                               donation - at no extra cost to you. If you pay tax in the UK,
                                                               a charity can reclaim basic rate tax (25%) on your
                                                               donation.
                                                               Remember if you are donating, you should be aware that
                                                               HM Revenue & Customs may recover unpaid tax from you
                                                               if you have not paid sufficient tax in the year to cover the
                                                               Gift Aid on your donations.
                                                               Example If you donate £100 each to 5 different charities,
                                                               your total donations will be £500, your total donation is
                                                               worth £625, with the Gift Aid portions being £125. In this
                                                               case you must have paid Income or Capital Gains Tax of at
                                                               least £125 or the consequence will be that HMRC ask you
                                                               to pay some of the income tax that the charities have
                                                               claimed back.  (Also, if you are a higher rate taxpayer, you
                                                               can also claim a tax refund of £125 – the same amount
                                                               claimed back by the charities.)
