The latest figures show that a further 428 Covid-19 patients died in the previous 24 hours bringing the total number of deaths from the virus in all settings to 33,614 there were 3,446 new cases in the UK.

At the Government’s daily briefing, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that in the last day more than 126,000 tests have been carried out.

He reiterated that the UK is currently on level four on the virus alert scale devised by the government last week. He says given the rate of average transmissions is coming down, "we can now begin moving carefully to level three".

He added: "It is clear that transport has a critical role to play" in helping people who are going back to work stay safe as they get there. People should use a car if they can, instead of travelling by public transport, he added.

It was earlier reported that a total of 101 patients have now died of Covid-19 related symptoms at Great Western Hospital. Today’s figures show that 424 in Swindon local authority area have been tested positive for Covid-19 and in Wiltshire the figure is 498.
