Residents are being invited to join Swindon Borough Council at special flag raising ceremony on VE Day, which will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe.
The ceremony, which will pay tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the war, will include hymns, speeches from both the Leader of the Council, Councillor Jim Robbins, and the Mayor, Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh and guest visitors from local Brownie and Scout groups.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Jim Robbins, said: “Without the sacrifices of people 80 years ago, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the freedoms we have today, and I’m pleased we are able to invite residents across Swindon to commemorate VE Day with us at Civic Offices.
“I’m inviting everyone across the Borough to join us in marking this important moment, whether that be at our event in Civic Offices, at a local church or by attending a street party.”
The flag raising ceremony will begin at 4.30pm on Thursday, 8 May and take place at Civic Offices reception on Euclid Street. As well as attending, residents are invited to bring food and drink to the ceremony for other guests to enjoy as part of a Street Part
