Residents and staff at Barchester White Lodge Care Home near Swindon recently came together to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone as resident Iris Smith marked her 100th birthday with a game of snooker.
The centenarian enjoyed a heartfelt celebration organised by White Lodge team alongside her family, with a day filled with music, memories, and a very special surprise.
As part of the festivities, she received a special birthday card from His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen, along with many lovely messages from friends, family, and staff.
The day included a delightful mini concert featuring some of Iris’ favourite songs from the 1960s, bringing back treasured memories from years gone by. Her family also created a beautiful photo collage capturing highlights from her incredible century of life.
To mark the occasion, the Head Chef at White Lodge prepared a stunning birthday cake in Iris’ favourite flavours, which she was delighted to see as everyone gathered to celebrate her milestone birthday.
However, one of the most memorable moments of the celebration came when the team helped make one of Iris’ wishes come true. Knowing she has always loved watching snooker on television, staff arranged a special trip for her to play snooker at Hollywood Bowl in Swindon.
Although she has long been a fan of the sport, this was the very first time she had the opportunity to play herself – making the experience even more meaningful.
Iris was thrilled with the surprise and shared her appreciation with the team and said: “What you arranged was wonderful. I never thought you would do all this for me. Thank you so much.”
The Senior General Manager at White Lodge, Ramona Gherendi said: “Celebrating Iris’ 100th birthday was incredibly special for everyone at White Lodge. Being able to help make her wish of playing snooker come true and seeing the joy it brought her made the day unforgettable for our whole team.”
The celebration was a wonderful reminder of the importance of creating meaningful moments and fulfilling residents’ wishes at White Lodge Care Home.
