Local residents in Swindon have been coming together to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May) through a series of uplifting, inclusive, and community-focused activities designed to support wellbeing, connection and positive mental health.

Monday 11 May set the tone for the week with not one, but two fantastic events offering something for everyone. In the morning, attendees gathered at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway for a memorable event centred on community, local heritage and shared experiences. Guests enjoyed a warm welcome with a cuppa and conversation before Swindon & Cricklade Railway volunteer, Geoff delivered a fascinating talk on the railway’s history, highlighting the significant “David-and-Goliath” challenges it has overcome.

Swindon & Cricklade Railway volunteer, Tony then shared a powerful reflection on the importance of volunteering, explaining how supporting the railway has helped individuals develop skills, build friendships and improve their mental wellbeing. Guided tours of the railway rounded off the morning, giving attendees the chance to step back in time and connect with both history and each other.

In the evening, attention turned to physical wellbeing at the White Eagle Outdoor Gym, where residents took part in a high-energy group workout session. Led by Matt Fruci, the session combined expert guidance with humour and encouragement, creating a welcoming space for all abilities — including several first-time users.

Participants worked in pairs, alternating between gym equipment and bodyweight exercises, building both confidence and camaraderie. With sunshine, fresh air and the calming sounds of nature, the session highlighted the powerful link between physical activity and mental health. As one participant summed up: “Fun… but brutal!”

Continuing the theme of inclusivity, the week also featured the much-loved Craft and Connect group, offering a calm and creative space for people to relax, unwind and socialise. The session provided an opportunity for residents to express themselves creatively while building meaningful connections in a supportive environment.

A spokesperson said: “We have focused on creating a varied programme to ensure there is something for everyone — from history and heritage, to physical activity, to creative wellbeing spaces.”

Chairman of the Parish Council, Vinay Manro, said: “As a Parish Council, we place huge importance on creating supportive opportunities for residents to get together.

“Whether that’s through physical activity, shared interests or simply having a space to talk and connect, these moments play a vital role in supporting positive mental health.

"It’s fantastic to see our community engaging so warmly with the activities this week, and we’re committed to continuing to provide inclusive opportunities for everyone.”

Looking ahead, the week will conclude with an exciting opportunity for younger residents at the local skate park. Saturday 16, from 2pm to 4pm, SK8Jam — delivered in partnership with ATBShop — will bring together skating, creativity and community.

The event will feature skate challenges and mini competitions, creative ‘arty’ activities, and plenty of space to socialise and relax, along with an ice cream van to add to the atmosphere. Local youth services will also be in attendance to share information about support available for young people in a friendly, no-pressure environment.

Residents are encouraged to come along — whether to skate, watch, create or simply enjoy the positive, welcoming atmosphere.

Together, these events highlight the importance of connection, movement, creativity and community support in promoting good mental health, demonstrating how small moments of togetherness can make a big difference.
