Heidi Alexander, Labour MP for Swindon South and Secretary of State for Transport has spoken on social media regarding the departure of Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, yesterday (22/06).

Heidi Alexander said: “There are some days when I really struggle to find the right words to express how I feel.

“Much of my day today has been focussed on responding to the horrific train crash in Bedford. I gave a statement to the House of Commons and would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the train driver who sadly died in the collision. My thoughts are with all those who remain in hospital, their family and friends.

“But of course, this morning we also heard Keir give a speech in Downing Street, tendering his resignation as Leader of the Labour Party and announcing his intention to leave No10 this summer.

“Keir is quite simply one of the most decent, hard working, kind and thoughtful people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with.

“He made the Labour Party electable again and has served our country with incredible determination and resilience.

“In the summer of 2024, the Labour Party promised a decade of national renewal. Decisions taken by Keir and his team have laid the foundations for that renewal and I have no doubt that as he leaves Downing Street, he leaves the country in a better state than that in which he found it.

“I am immensely proud to have served in his Cabinet.

“Our politics must find a way to confront the challenges of the volatile and turbulent world in which we live and we must do that by building an effective team - one which enables us to harness the energy and idealism of the Labour movement, whilst delivering practical change in the lives of ordinary men and women across the country.

“My determination to ensure that this country has a Government of stability, fairness and common sense is as strong today as it was on the day of the General Election two years ago.

“For now, I just want to say thank you to a man of deep integrity, someone who has committed his life to public service and who can hold his head high having delivered positive change for millions of people as our Prime Minister.”
