A £2.2 million deal has been struck to buy the freehold of the County Ground. And the sale is set to be officially sanctioned by cabinet today.
The deal, subject to cabinet approval, will see Swindon Town Supporters’ Trust and Swindon Town Football club take over the running of the site. The agreement comes two years after a failed £1.1 million bid by the supporters trust for the grounds. And a further offer from STFC that was turned down last year.
Swindon Town chairman Lee Power welcomed the development, saying that this presented an “exciting and unique opportunity” to boost the revenue of the football club and improve facilities.
Council leader David Renard said that the price-tag was in line with a figure suggested by independent assessors, adding that it was important for the council to get the best deal for the people of the town.
A covenant put in place by the Goddard estate, ensures that the site must be used for sport of leisure purposes.
