The Swindon Bangladeshi Association is to hold the first outdoor Boishaki Mela to celebrate the Bengali New year and celebrate the work of mayor Junab Ali.

Taking place on April 14 at Faringdon Road Park, the event is the biggest outdoor event hosted by the association and will celebrate the past mayoral year of Swindon's first British Bangladeshi Mayor in Swindon.

One of the organisers, Abdul Amin, said: "The Bangladeshi community is very proud and overwhelmed by the amazing work the mayor has been doing this past year in drawing communities of all backgrounds together in Swindon and promoting social harmony within our town.

"The other goal is to appreciate the presence of the Bengali community in society and appreciate their contributions in terms of culture and arts. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the rich and diverse culture, music and arts of our country, Bangladesh. We hope to receive a large turnout of people from across the town and neighbouring towns.

"It is a great opportunity for families to experience South Asian Culture, to include a range of different foods, dance, henna, fashion show and much more. Artists will be coming from London and include Rowshanara Monir, Smash Bengali (comedians) and Nish."

All proceeds received from the Mela will be donated to the Mayor's Charities including Twigs (supporting individuals suffering from mental health problems), The Habour Project (supporting refugees in our local community) and Swindon Community Radio 105.5.
