Next month will see the launch of Swindon's first ever footgolf tournament - with a £100 prize for the winner.

Wiltshire’s largest, and Swindon’s only 18-hole footgolf course is hosting the county’s first Footgolf Tournament on Sunday 30 June, with a £100 cash prize and trophy up for grabs for the winner.

Footgolf, a hybrid sport of golf and football, has vastly grown in popularity across the UK - peaking the interests of both adults and children alike.

Based just two minutes drive from J16 of the M4, Basset Down Golf Complex opened up a 9-hole ‘crazy footgolf’ and 18-hole footgolf course last May, after expanding from 12-holes the previous year due to growing demand. Similar to golf, the aim of the game is to kick a football from a tee into a large hole on a green, in the least amount of kicks possible.

Basset Down GC is inviting people to enter the Tournament, which will take place on Sunday 30 June and start at 4pm. Taking place over 18-holes, entrants will play in groups of four, and the person at the end of the event with the lowest score wins.

The Tournament’s lead sponsor, Earthline Ltd based in Marlborough, is contributing a £100 cash prize and trophy for the winner, £60 for second place, £40 for third place, as well as spot prizes on the day for longest drive and 'nearest the pin' challenges.

Basset Down Golf Complex’s Assistant Manager, Rosie Nutland, said: “Footgolf continues to be a really popular activity for groups of family and friends who are looking for something different to do in Wiltshire. Last summer, we had lots of people asking if we would consider running an event as they enjoyed playing our course, but wanted to play against other people in a slightly more competitive setting.

“The beauty of footgolf is that you don’t have to be an expert footballer or golfer to play; it really is a game for all abilities. We also want the tournament to help break down the boundaries and assumptions about golf courses. Even though we have a separate 9-hole golf course, we’re also an open and inclusive club, where everyone is welcome in our clubhouse, whether you’re a golfer or not.”

The complex is set overlooking the backdrop of the North Chalk Downs, with the footgolf course spreading over 2,183 yards. To make the game even more interesting, the holes also feature natural obstacles such as trees, water and bunkers to play around.

The Footgolf Tournament will take place on Sunday 30 June at 4pm at Basset Down Golf Complex (SN4 9QW). Entry is £15 per head, which also includes a free burger and chips to enjoy after your game whilst the scores are being calculated.
