The victim, who is in her 70s, noticed her purse was missing while she was shopping in Marks & Spencer in Regent Street, shortly after 11am on 19 September 2019.

She had previously been to the nearby branch of HSBC, where she withdrew £300.

The purse also contained bank cards, which we know the thief then attempted to use at various shops in Swindon.

Our enquiries have been ongoing and we have now released a CCTV image of a woman we would like to speak to in connection with the theft.

PC Stephen Yeates, from Swindon South Community Policing Team, said: "We believe the victim had been watched in HSBC by the thief, who saw her withdraw the money and decided to target her for her purse.

"This was a despicable crime, and we would urge people to look at the CCTV image and call us if you recognise the woman pictured.

"We would also urge people to always be vigilant when using ATM machines. Please be careful that no-one is standing close by when you withdraw money, and be careful to keep your purse and other valuables safe in a zipped up bag."

Anyone with information about the theft should call PC Yeates on 101, quoting crime reference 54190093130. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
