Timber removed the traditional way at Lydiard
During December four heavy horses were employed to remove felled
wood as part of the extensive park management programme.
Two Belgian bred Ardennes called Jeton and Yser, driven by Frankie
Woodgate of Natural Traction, pulled out felled trunks and branches,
which were removed by a lightweight power crane on the back of a
trailer pulled by Clydesdales, Clyde and Drum, managed by John
Bunce of Pine Ridge Timber Horses.
The horses were brought in to minimise pollution and damage to
standing trees and coppices, as well as reducing compaction and ruts to
the woodland floor.

Have you got a couch potato for a pet?
The festive season is over and it’s not only humans who will be
concerned about weight control for their New Year’s resolution,
writes Linzi Matthews at Thameswood Animal Hospital.
Obesity in ourselves hit the headlines in 2006, but these same prob-
lems can affect pets. The causes are similar: the accumulation of excess
energy stored as fat. In other words, your pet is receiving more calories
than it needs for body maintenance and energy expenditure (exercise).
We think we are feeding our pets only a small quantity of food but
forget the odd biscuit, peppermint cream or the drink of milky tea at
bedtime. And sometimes we also forget that, in comparison to humans,
a biscuit a day is the equivalent to a packet for him.
So...what can you do? Thameswood Small Animal Hospital is offer-
ing free weight assessments for your pet during January. Our team of
qualified nurses will weigh your pet, assess his present weight, agree a
target weight and discuss diet, nutrition and exercise and send you
home with a plan to help your pet regain his waistline with two weekly
follow up appointments to assess his progress.
So, does your pet spend more time lounging on the sofa than you?
Kick him or her off the couch and book an appointment on 526780 with
our nurse.
