experience some side effects, most
commonly headaches and blurred
vision.
There may be more to fear as
the additive has been linked with
cancer. In 2005, the results of a long-
term laboratory rat feeding study
indicated that aspartame could
increase the incidence of several
types of tumour. This appeared
to back up evidence published in
1996 linking aspartame with an
increase in an aggressive type of
brain tumour.
Basil Jones is convinced that food
additives, including aspartame,
should be examined more closely.
He believes that ADHD is vastly
over-diagnosed. When working
at Clover House complementary
therapy centre for children in Bris-
tol, which he co-founded, he worked
with children with behavioural
problems. “When we took them
off fi zzy drinks and additive laden
food, their ADHD disappeared,”
he said.
“SHOC is about publicising the
idea that we really must pay atten-
tion to what we are doing to our chil-
dren. It’s not enough to trust large
companies making millions.”
