                                                                     haydon’s new head comes home
                                                                   During his interview for the post of head of Haydon Wick Primary
                                                                   School, Simon Cowley’s thoughts were often miles away.

                                                                                               where he was deputy head of an
                                                                                               international  school,  but  had  to

                                                                                               day after he returned home, his son

                                                                                               Noah, was born. “It was a fantastic
                                                                                               week: I got a new son and a new
                                                                                               job,” he said.
                                                                                                Chair  of  governors,  Mark  Ed-
                                                                                               wards, said that it had been clear
                                                                                               that Mr Cowley was right for the
                                                                                               school. “We chose him because of
                                                                                               his enthusiasm and drive and his
                                                                                               experience. There is an opportunity
                                                                                               to bring significant change in terms
                                                                                               of the school’s culture.”
                                                                                                Swindon  born  and  bred,  Mr
                                                                                               Cowley  wanted  to  return  to  the
                                                                                               town to raise his family. He grew up
                                                                                               in Lydiard Millicent and attended
                                                                                               Swindon  New  College  before
                                                                                               teacher  training,  but  he  has  long
                                                                                               connections with Haydon Wick.
                                                                                                Now living close to the school,
                                                                                               he has a huge incentive to succeed
                                                                                               in his new role. “This will be the
                                                                                               school for my son so I’ll make sure
                                                                                               it’s the best for him and the com-
                                                                                               munity.”
                                                                                                His son won’t be the first member
                                                                                               of the Cowley family to attend; his
                                                                                               great grandmother was a pupil of
                                                                                               the old Haydon Wick school.
                                                                                                “I’m looking to inspire children
                                                                                               here to create a learning environ-
                                                                                               ment,”  said  Mr  Cowley.  ”Devel-
                                                                                               oping technology means we don’t
                                                                                               know what knowledge we’ll need
                                                                                               in the future, we want to nurture
                                                                                               children  so  that  they  learn  how
                                                                                               to learn.”
