Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST)
The Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) courses provide high quality
professional development to those teaching or wanting to teach mathematics
at Secondary level.
The aims of the courses are to:
● Enhance your mathematical knowledge to give you confidence to teach Mathematics
● Inspire your enthusiasm for mathematics
● Provide you with motivating activities and tasks for teaching mathematics
● Enhance your pedagogical skills in teaching mathematics.
This course is aimed at Secondary and Further Education teachers in numerate
disciplines who are already teaching some mathematics or intending to teach
mathematics or returning to teach mathematics and wanting to upgrade their
mathematical skills and knowledge:
● up to and including Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics for the new syllabuses; or
● for teaching the new Core Maths curriculum for Post-16 education (these are new
courses aimed at students who obtain a grade C or above at GCSE Maths but not
continuing on to A or AS Mathematics).
For state school teachers this course is FREE, funded through the National College
for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and run by Commonweal School, working in
partnership with Plymouth University.
The Commonweal School tutors will provide face-to-face sessions throughout the year,
supported by e-learning and online assessment and accreditation from CIMT
at Plymouth University.
There will also be access (again FREE) to a 30 credit Masters degree module:
‘Teaching Mathematics through Problem Solving.’
The introductory meeting for this course will be held at Commonweal School
on: Wednesday 5th October from 1600 to 1800 hours.
