As part of a world-wide Rotary project, Swindon Thamesdown Rotary and Brookfield Primary School teamed up to bring new life to Shaw Forest Park.

In a bid to help sustain the environment, Rotary groups across the globe have pledged to plant one tree per member. The scheme is the brainchild of Rotary International President, Ian Riseley.

Swindon Thamesdown Rotary contacted local school Brookfield to invite pupils to parktake in the project. The local group are hoping to encourage the community to get involved, as well as raise awareness towards deforestation and climate change.

Swindon Thamesdown Rotary President, David Dukes, said: "It is good to teach children about the environment, as the future is in their hands. Rotary take a pride in working within their communities to help make improvements for everyone's benefit.

"We're hoping we will help raise awareness for the children about environmental issues, and for them to go away and tell others about the good they have done including the long term environmental benefits this project will have.

"With the help of the pupils we have planted 90 trees at Shaw Forest Park."

Rotary International President Australian Ian Riseley, said: "It is my hope that the result of this effort will be far greater than the environmental benefit that those 1.2 million new trees will bring.

"I believe the greater result will be that Rotary recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself."
