A UK-wide survey has found Swindon to be the most employee friendly based on a raft of categories.

Adobe Express delved into allaspects of working life to reveal the best places for for employees in the UK, and says 30 percent of the population are looking for a new job or career change.

To generate the employee-friendly cities list, Adobe Express compared 30 places, looking into factors including but not limited to average annual salary, the price of a cappuccino, the cost of public transport and access to green space.

Swindon's employment rate was higher than across the South West as a whole in the year ending December 2023, and has one of the best scores for unemployment in Adobe’s rankings.

The Swindon and Wiltshire area has an above average number of large companies, including brands such BMW, Nationwide and the Ministry of Defence, and Swindon ranks seventh in Britain when it comes to the rate of productivity per worker.

Cllr Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “We’re really pleased that Swindon is recognised as one of the best places in the UK to work.

“Adobe’s latest data is in line with other such rankings including the most recent Demos-PwC Good Growth for Cities Index, which saw Swindon outperform London, Manchester and Birmingham, while also coming out ahead of near neighbours Oxford and Reading in a range of work and economic-related indicators.

“We’ve got an incredibly varied job market, from manufacturing to banking, and it makes the town a great place to invest.

“We want to make Swindon the best place it can be to work, live and spend time in. That’s why we’ve been investing in our country parks and open spaces as well as delivering high quality housing opportunities.

“Throughout this year we’ll also be working closely with local businesses and organisations to see how we can use this positive energy to regenerate our town centre, which will include the adoption of the ‘Heart of Swindon’ vision and work to bring forward a new entertainment venue.”

Second place in the ratings went to Milton Keynes, followed by Stoke-on-Trent, Reading, Plymouth, Sheffield, Leeds, Peterborough, Kingston upon Hull and Brighton and Hove.
