Local housebuilder Bellway has donated a sum of £500 to help Wroughton Youth FC set up a new under-7s team.

A housebuilder has donated £500 to help a football club achieve its goal to start a new team for aspiring young players.

Bellway has sponsored the kits for Wroughton Youth FC’s new under-7 Dragons team.

The donation by Bellway, which is building 103 new homes at Ridgeway Park, off Marlborough Road in the village, has enabled the club to set up a second under-7s team after a large number of youngsters turned up at training.

Wroughton Youth FC runs more than 20 teams, from the under-7s to the under-17s, and has more than 300 players attend training every week.

Martin Speakman, head coach of Wroughton Dragons, said: “We are thrilled to get this donation from Bellway because it has enabled us to set up another under-7s team.

“When we started the season last September, we realised we had too many children for just one team as the games are five-a-side and you tend to have a squad of nine or ten, but we did not have the money to pay for the kit for another team.

“We set up one team, sponsored by the local Fox and Hounds pub, and called them the Foxes.

“Now, with this money from Bellway we have been able to set up another team called the Dragons and enter them into the North Wilts Youth Football League too. The children are very excited about it and thrilled to be able to put on a brand-new kit and play in the league.

“It is incredibly generous of Bellway to give us £500 to allow us to give the players a real sense of pride and unity in their team. These youngsters see the top players in their favourite team playing in sponsored kits week in, week out, in the Premier League and now they can emulate them.”

Christel Hawkins, Sales Manager at Bellway South West, said: “It is an absolute pleasure for us to be able to sponsor the kits for the wonderfully-named Wroughton Dragons.

“At Bellway, our ethos is to play a positive part in the daily lives of the local community and we hope this is doing just that.

“We are delighted that our donation is being used to set up another team to allow the children in the village to play for their local club.

“In this internet age dominated by mobile phones and tablets, it is very refreshing and impressive to hear that hundreds of children are turning up to this club every week to get outside and take part in sport.

“We wish the Dragons, and every other team at Wroughton Youth FC, all the best in their upcoming games.”
