People in Swindon and Wiltshire are invited to find out more about the disease which last year affected more than 3,000 people in the local area.

Cancer, which is currently expected to affect one in every two people born after 1960, is the subject being put under the microscope at the next free health talk at the Great Western Hospital.

Hosted by expert oncology consultants Dr Anne Kendal and Dr Sarah Lowndes, the free lecture, to be held on Wednesday 27 April, will shine a light on what causes the disease and the best ways to prevent it.

There will also be discussions on the latest treatments available for cancer patients, as well as the opportunity for attendants to quiz the two doctors during the closing Q&A session.

Last year at the Great Western Hospital, around 3,000 people were told they had cancer, equivalent to 60 people every week. Additionally, more than 10,000 people from Swindon and the surrounding areas are referred to the Great Western Hospital each week by their GP for a suspected form of cancer.

The talk on cancer is the latest in a series of popular health lectures at the Great western Hospital, with other recent topics including blackouts and seizures, menopause, men’s health, organ donation and migraines.

Simon Denning, Membership and Governance Officer, said: “Our Trust is full of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are experts on their specific areas of medicine.

“By hosting these talks, we hope that local people will take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that is available to them.”

Booking for the event, which begins at 6.30pm in Lecture Hall One of the Academy, is not required.

The next free health talk will focus on obesity and takes place on Thursday 2 June.
