If you enjoy running, or need the motivation to start, one local charity has a challenge for you and, with each step, you could be raising much needed funds to support local people.

Prospect Hospice has launched the ‘Marathon Your Way’ challenge throughout October for seasoned marathon runners and those who want to have a go but haven’t quite found the right way to do it.

Sally Langheim, Challenge Events Fundraiser at Prospect Hospice, said: “The beauty of our ‘Marathon Your Way’ challenge is that you get to set how you complete the challenge. For keen runners, this can be done in one go or by completing two half marathons over a weekend or, for those who aren’t quite ready for such a distance, they could complete the challenge a little bit at a time and run, jog or walk just a mile a day over 26 days. However, you do it, it’s entirely up to you.”

Sharon O’Neill, who has signed up to take part, said: “I’m raising money for Prospect Hospice because they are committed to providing outstanding specialist care for people in the local community living with a life-threatening illness and to their carers, family and friends including bereavement support.”

Regardless of how the challenge is completed, whether on your own, with friends, out with the family dog or at home on the treadmill, all participants have to do is complete the distance of 26.2 miles during the month of October and, to say thank you, the hospice will reward everyone who completes the distance with a medal and certificate.

Ms Langheim continued: “By taking part in our ‘Marathon Your Way’ event throughout October, you’ll be helping us to support local people needing specialist end of life care. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been supporting even more of our patients in their homes, delivering the much needed care and support they need. Your support is needed now more than ever to enable us to continue this vital work in our community.”

Those who complete this challenge before the end of October will be a third of the way towards completing the hospice’s 2020 Ironman Challenge which combines the marathon with a 100 mile cycle ride in November and a 2.6 mile swim in December.

Registration costs just £10 for adults and £5 each for children and pets. To find out more about the challenge and to sign up, visit www.prospect-hospice.net/run
