The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is appealing to people in Swindon to help find retirement homes for 171 ex-commercial free-range laying hens.
The charity is holding a rehoming event in South Marston on Saturday 19 September.
The 171 hens are still waiting to be booked in with adopters, and bookings close at 3pm on Friday 18 September, so BHWT is keen to reach anyone who can offer a small flock a secure new home.
Spokesperson Andy Hill said: “People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring. They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for.
"Hens make great pets, with so much personality, and many will still lay the occasional egg.
“We’ve still got 171 girls waiting for homes in South Marston on 19 September, so we’d love to hear from anyone around South Marston, Swindon and the surrounding Wiltshire area who can offer a few of them a safe, happy retirement.”
The hens are reaching the end of their commercial laying lives at around 18 months old. BHWT rehomes them so they can enjoy a second chance as much-loved pets rather than their working life being the end of the story.
Anyone looking to adopt needs to be able to provide a secure hen house and outdoor area, food and water, and a little bit of TLC. Hens are social animals, so adopters should be looking to take a small group rather than a single bird.
