Volunteer SWINDON 105.5 presenter Martin Upfold is preparing for a skydive to raise awareness of Parkinson's disease.
He is also raising money for Parkinson's UK.
Himself diagnosed with the condition in 2020, Martin is keen to demonstrate that people with disabilities can achieve incredible milestones.
After diagnosis, Martin faced a difficult period of acceptance. However, with positive support and encouragement, he embarked on a journey to redefine his life, joining exercise classes and a singing group through Parkinson's in Swindon whilst continuing with his radio role.
Martin's long-term commitment to the station, where he has presented a weekly Brass Band programme since the station's inception almost 17 years ago, has been a cornerstone of his life.
He has learned to record and edit instead of presenting live, but his aim is to once again be able to broadcast live.
As SWINDON 105.5 approaches its 17th anniversary in March, the station celebrates not only its longevity but also the dedication to and by volunteers such as Martin, who have been instrumental in its success.
On 11 April, World Parkinson's Day will be observed and in a powerful gesture to demonstrate that having a disability does not limit one's potential, Martin decided to carry out a parachute jump from 20,000 feet at Wiltshire’s Old Sarum.
The announcement was made by an interview broadcast on the station - and that’s when Martin’s family found out.
Mum Doreen said: “I thought he must be mad! He’s made up his mind, so I support him. He’s doing this for two very good causes that mean a lot to him."
Radio Station Manager Shirley Ludford said: “Martin is an inspiration and serves to show that with the right support and passion, people with a disability can achieve extraordinary things.
"His story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the power of community support."
Martin said: “This will probably be a once in a lifetime challenge, so I am making the most of the opportunity and am aiming to raise £10,000.
"Running costs have risen for both organisations and this will go quite a way to help ensure they continue to provide their service to our community and support many other individuals."
