A grandfather diagnosed with terminal lung cancer is to abseil down a cliff face in aid of Prospect Hospice.

Despite living with only one lung, Melvin Camden is determined to make the most of his time and raise funds for the vital cause.

He said: “I wanted to raise money for Prospect Hospice, the charity that will provide care and support for me and my family when the time comes.

"Prospect Hospice is a fantastic charity, and I know they will be there for me and my family when we need them most. I hope that my abseil will inspire others to join me in supporting their vital work.”

Melvin has so far raised £650 for the hospice.

His children, Nathan and Emma, set up a JustGiving page to support their father's fundraising efforts. “We are incredibly proud of our dad for taking on this challenge,” said Nathan. “He is an inspiration to us all.”

Melvin’s family is determined to keep fundraising for Prospect Hospice: “We are taking part in the Swindon Half Marathon in September and this summer we are planning a virtual walk from Lands’ End to John ‘O Groats, which will end at the front of Prospect Hospice in Wroughton.

"Dad will be taking part at some point near the end as long as his chemotherapy goes well.”

Prospect Hospice CEO Jeremy Lune said: “Melvin's story is a wonderful example of the incredible community spirit that surrounds the hospice.

"His courage and determination are an inspiration to us all. We are incredibly grateful for his support and for the support of everyone who has donated.

"Melvin’s adventure shows us all that life is there for living. We all need to be more Melvin!”

Prospect Hospice is a charity providing end of life care to people 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

The hospice provides all its services free of charge to patients and this is made possible thanks to generous donations from the community it serves which raises 75% of the £8.5million it costs each year to operate.

Patient support is delivered in a variety of ways, tailored to the needs of the individual. Specialist teams provide clinical, emotional and practical support to patients and their families delivered at the hospice in Wroughton, Swindon, and in people’s homes.

Prospect Hospice was founded in 1980 and serves a community of more than 300,000 people in Swindon and north east Wiltshire, including Royal Wootton Bassett, Marlborough and Pewsey, plus Lechlade and Fairford in Gloucestershire.
