Swindon Bus Company engineer Dominic Winning will take on the mammoth cycle ride for Transaid.

He is gearing up for a fundraising challenge - cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington, in support of Transaid.

Mr Winning will cover 172 miles over two days from 23 September, as he makes his way across The Way of the Roses route in aid of the charity, which transforms lives across the world through safe, available, and sustainable transport.

He said: “I’ve always been a keen cyclist and decided to embark on this challenge to raise much needed funds for Transaid.

“How many of us have needed to go to hospital, and just caught a bus, taxi or drove there? Or caught the bus into town and not given it a second thought? I did. Well, I used to.

“Then I went to South Sudan - where roads were mud drifts, six feet high. A place where accidents happen everyday because conditions are so poor. Where children play, not knowing the dangers they face because there is no separation from the road to the playground.

“Transaid are doing this remarkable thing - enriching lives and ensuring the futures of generations to come, by putting in roads where they are needed most. These are crucial for transporting medicines, and providing access to urgent medical assistance, water, food, supplies and so much more.

"This vital charity does amazing work, with partners and governments, to solve transport challenges in economically developing countries across the world, and I’m determined to raise at least £1,000 towards this mission.

“I’ve been in training for a while and I know it’s going to be tough, but it’ll be worth it to know I’m playing even a small part in helping to improve the lives of people in Africa and in other third world countries across the globe.”

Transaid is the official charity partner of Swindon’s Bus Company’s parent company, Go-Ahead Group.

Florence Bearman, Transaid head of fundraising, said: “Our cycle challenges are always a sell-out, with a real sense of camaraderie among the riders – but most importantly because they are a fantastic chance for supporters to raise essential funds for our lifesaving programmes, a cause close to all our hearts. We cannot wait to welcome people back to the saddle in September.”
