Julia’s House children’s hospice is seeking 20 outdoor enthusiasts to take part in the charity’s new Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in September.
The charity, which helps people throughout the Swindon area and far beyond, will host an information evening at its hospice building in Devizes on Tuesday 1 April for anyone who would like to find out more.
With spectacular scenery, friendly company and proper brews, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge offers a fun and unique hiking adventure close to home. The circular walk encompasses the three major peaks in the Yorkshire Dales - Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough.
Julia’s House Events Fundraiser Sarah Agnew said: “We’re really excited to add the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to our events listing this year.
"With over 1,700m of ascent in total, it’s certainly not going to be easy, but we think it’s an ideal adventure for someone who loves to explore new hiking routes and wants to challenge themselves. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and raise vital funds for the local children and families that Julia’s House supports.”
During the challenge, hikers will have the choice to complete all three peaks in under 12 hours or take the 24-mile route at a slower pace, soaking in the living landscape of the Yorkshire Dales.
Hikers will discover an abundance of wildlife at their feet and in the open skies above as they explore the green rolling hills, craggy limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls of this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Afterwards, participants can take off their boots and enjoy a well-deserved glass of fizz while they celebrate earning their place in the official Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club.
The organised four-day trip, from Friday 19 to Monday 22 September, will also include an extra day of adventure exploring the picturesque Ingleton Waterfalls Trail at a leisurely pace.
All accommodation, transport, mountain guides and meals will be provided, including a relaxed pub dinner to share memories from the weekend.
One avid Wiltshire fundraiser, Linda Tracey, has taken on several challenges over the past six years with Julia’s House and loved them all.
“Even though each challenge has been difficult, the people you meet and the camaraderie you share makes you feel like you can do it. It’s a brilliant experience and I’d recommend it to anyone,” said 59-year-old Linda.
“The care Julia’s House provides is so important, and every little donation helps. When I took on the Great Wall of China with Julia’s House in 2019, I visited the hospice, and I was surprised by how much the charity does for families and how little they get from the government.
“I think it’s lovely that Julia’s House looks after the whole family, and not just the poorly child. I also didn’t realise until quite recently that the nurses carry on supporting families for up to five years after their child passes away.”
Linda added: “I’ve been so blessed with my children and grandchildren that we haven’t needed the services of Julia’s House. And when you speak to families whose children have needed that care, it does make you realise how lucky you are – and what we can all do to help parents who haven’t had that luck.”
Further information can be found here, and early birds can receive £100 off their registration fee if they book before midnight on 30 April, with promo code 100OFF.
