Does Swindon need a casino?

Over the years, we’ve discussed in detail whether Swindon will ever get a brick-and-mortar casino like many other towns around the United Kingdom have. In fact, for the last twenty years Swindon has been rumoured to be the location for the first casino in the county, with many local officials discussing the plan’s potential. Alas, we are yet to see a casino being built in the area. Still, this by no means insinuates that Swindon is lacking in entertainment and leisure venues. Quite the contrary, Swindon is the shining pearl of Wiltshire with numerous local establishments scattered around town. There are restaurants including Leonardo Ristorantino, The Greek Olive and Helen Browning’s Chop House to dine at, while bars like Rudi’s and Longs continue to attract customers looking for a great night out. Following a delicious meal and a few drinks, most Swindon natives then journey to clubs such as Suju, The Lava Lounge and The Box, all of which offer more entertainment then you could shake a cocktail stick at. As for culture, Swindon is home to an Arts Centre where a variety of acts come to play, whether they be re-enacting Shakespeare or playing their music. Really, the only thing we are missing here is that highly anticipated casino – but does this mean the people of Swindon and tourists traveling from around the world are missing out? As of writing this piece there are about 140 casinos scattered around the UK, 25 of which are based in London. Due to the 2005 Gambling Act, which really didn’t do a lot to expand on the 1968 Gaming Act, casinos can only be built in specific areas of the United Kingdom and any talks centred around casino-based resorts have long been resigned to the ‘dream ideas’ pile. Local council representatives continued to see the benefits of opening a land-based casino in Swindon though. There would be a large financial increase as visitors and businesses invested in the casino, and thus the town’s revenue stream. As recently as 2011, Swindon Council officials suggested that a local casino would be better than people having to visit Bournemouth, Bristol and Southampton to play at a casino, but discussions have either failed to occur or have ended already. Meanwhile, as town constituents discuss whether a brick-and-mortar establishment will be beneficial for Swindon the online casino industry is flourishing, providing further proof that casinos are still a highly sort-after entertainment option. Leading iGaming sites offer a range of games to their customers including slot games, roulette, blackjack and video poker. Furthermore, these games often come with their own variations, themes and bonuses so that customers are never short of variety. More recently, online casinos have started introducing live casino games that are meant to make the experience far more immersive and authentic. For instance, players can visit online iGaming operator MrGreen and participate in live games featuring live, professional dealers that address you, deal and play in real time. In towns such as Swindon where there is no casino to visit physically, this is the closest we can get to a real casino experience. Plus, as technology like virtual reality continues to advance, these live dealer games will become even more realistic; like you’re playing at a real casino while in your living room. If what online casinos currently have to offer is enough for you, then really Swindon doesn’t need to invest in a land-based casino. Plus, if you are personally waiting for the council discussions to produce something, at least there are iGaming operators online that will provide you with clever casino technology that will hopefully keep you sated while we wait.
