Lawn Primary School was chosen for the launch of an innovative way of promoting deaf awareness.

Swindon and North Wiltshire Deaf Children's Society has teamed up with Swindon Hearing Support Team to provide all primary and special schools in the borough with Deaf Awareness resource bags.

Each bag contains books for the school library or classroom use which have deaf characters or raise deaf awareness, an activity booklet with awareness-raising activities, a fact sheet about deafness and hearing and posters highlighting awareness and fingerspelling - a way of using hand movements to spell words.

The bags also include information about local charities supporting deaf children and postcards with information about fingerspelling activities for classrooms.

Swindon Advisory Teacher of the deaf Jo Coote said: "We want to raise deaf awareness in all of our schools in Swindon."

The hearing support team discussed strategies with Emily Beardshaw, secretary of Swindon and North Wiltshire Deaf Children's Society, and the idea of the awareness resource bags was born.

Ms Beardshaw said: "I worked with Jo to fund it and put all the bags together.

"It's really lovely to see them finally going into schools."
