A special Valentine's themed cookery session took place for pupils at Lawn Manor Academy last weekend.

Teachers from Lawn Manor run a Saturday morning cookery class once a term for pupils and their parents, with seasonal menus designed to inspire and get tastebuds tingling.

This term’s session was said to have helped families gear up for Valentine’s Day, with an Italian-inspired menu of tear-and-share garlic bread, homemade pasta with arrabiata, carbonara and bolognaise sauces all made from scratch, followed by tiramisu.

Year 7 pupil Tyler and Year 8 pupil Jensen took part in the Valentine’s cookery session.

Tyler said: “I really enjoy cooking, especially burgers, pastas and chicken wings.”

Jensen added: “I love practising cooking, and I do it for my family, I particularly liked making Bolognese sauce.”

Marek Koza, Assistant Headteacher at Lawn Manor Academy, said: “Cooking and enjoying good food is a passion that many teachers share at Lawn Manor Academy and so these termly sessions are a great way for us to pass on our culinary enthusiasm and knowledge."

“Being able to make a meal is such an essential life skill and a fun family activity, so we’re very pleased to be able to invite parents into these sessions too.  Making pasta from scratch is something that many people find too daunting to try but with a bit of help and encouragement everyone found it an easy and satisfying meal to make.

"The families all went home with ingredients to recreate the meal, plus the lifelong skills and confidence to branch out and try other new recipes.

“The menus we put together for these sessions all focus on teaching nutritious, filling recipes that can easily be recreated at home.  A bonus is that pasta is such a cheap meal to make too and by making different sauces to go with it, you could have an endless repertoire of different meals.”

Lawn Manor Academy is part of the Ascend Learning Trust, formerly the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust.
