Nine Lawn Manor Academy pupils have been inspired by the end of the world and have won a competition to have their short stories published.

Their work can be seen in a book celebrating the country’s best young writers.

Young Writers’ competitions challenge school-aged pupils to submit their creative writing for the chance to see their stories published.

As part of the Mission Chaos competition, pupils were challenged to write a mini saga of no more than 100 words based around their concept of chaos.

They were given free rein within the topic, with Lawn Manor pupils choosing to base their stories on life after the end of the world; overthrowing the Government; the last few minutes of the world as a result of a solar storm; and wars between humans and robots, amongst other tales of hope and disaster.

A total of 25 pupils submitted their stories to the competition, with the winning entries coming from Year 8 pupils Deborah, Hope and Jyanca, as well as Year 9 pupils Metin and Crystal and Year 10 pupils Ayesha, Anikait, Oliver and Rofiat.

Their stories now feature in the book ‘Mission Chaos, Marvellous Myths’ with a copy also placed in the British Library.

Ellen Logan, English Teacher at Lawn Manor Academy explained; “We were really impressed by the quality of all of the entries from Lawn Manor Academy pupils and even with such a short word count they all managed to build a great feeling of suspense and excitement within their stories.

“To be a published author whilst still at school is a wonderful achievement.  Not only will the Lawn Manor Academy library proudly display the book and inspire many more young writers, but a copy will be added to the collection at the British Library where it will be kept forever.

"To think that our pupils’ writing will be sharing the same space as great writers like William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Charlotte Brontë is a testament to the talent and imagination of our pupils and we’re so proud of them.”

Lawn Manor Academy is part of the Ascend Learning Trust, and more information about the school can be found at www.lawnmanor.org.
