Lawn Manor Academy is celebrating pupils' best ever results in one of the most challenging youth mathematics competitions.

The Junior Maths Challenge is open to pupils across the country in years seven and eight, and competitors have 60 minutes to complete 25 multiple choice questions.

Building on the skills they learn in class, the competition encourages pupils to use mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to complete the paper.

This year, Lawn Manor Academy entered 47 pupils, with 13 achieving a bronze award, six silver and eight gold.

Year 7 pupils, Joyel and Dale, and Year 8 pupils, Esther, Myla, Ryan, Travis, Manasvi and James all achieved the prestigious gold award, ranking them in the top 10 percent of young mathematicians.

Joyel, Travis, Manasvi and James will go on to the next round of the competition, the Junior Kangaroo, in June.

Laura Conroy, Head of Maths at Lawn Manor Academy, said: “We’re very proud of our pupils for doing so well at the Junior Maths Challenge.  The paper is full of tricky problem-solving questions and so it challenges them to apply their learning in a very different approach to normal classwork.

"It’s definitely a challenge designed for those with a real love and thirst for maths and so to achieve such a great number of bronze, silver and gold awards is astounding.

“We’ve got an impressive track record here at Lawn Manor Academy of doing well in these challenges, and we have some excellent young mathematicians in our classes, but even so we were blown away by how well everyone has done this year and we’re looking forward to the next round.”
