Pupils at Noremarsh Junior School in Royal Wootton Bassett have been making and handing out random gifts to each other and to staff members.
Children were challenged to show kindness to people they don’t know very well around school for their Random Acts of Kindness Day.
Staff say they have chosen the new school values of ambition, belonging and compassion, with compassion and kindness being extremely strong themes, leading to a whole school goal of working together with kindness and respect.
Pupils have been busy writing cards for the school’s neighbours, delivering flowers to staff, painting friendship rocks for each other and noticing and thanking kind behaviour.
Head Teacher Hilary MacMeekin explained: “Today for Random Acts of Kindness Day I have challenged them to show kindness, Year 6 Ambassadors have been busy delivering cards and handing out daffodils, while Year 3 have been busy painting affirmation rocks to give to a randomly selected member of their class.
Other pupils have been writing kindness notes to hand to pupils and staff throughout the day. Hilary added: “I have been offered more cups of coffee today than I could actually drink in a week!”
Observations of kindness were noted by the Year 6 Ambassadors; with Freya observing: “Someone hadn’t tidied their desk, so Ollie did it for them."
Charlotte added: “There is a new person in our class and Reuben has helped them so much.”
Staff said due to the pandemic, the school has been placed in year group bubbles leaving many children feeling isolated.
Hilary said: “With covid mitigations we are not mixing as much as we would like so today felt like an opportunity to push that kindness beyond our friends and out across the community and neighbourhood.”
Noremarsh says it plans to continue the challenge next term by having each class carry out an act of kindness in the community, sharing their values with those around them.
Hilary commented: “I am really proud to lead a community which works together with kindness.”
