Future scientists and engineers have been showcasing an exciting range of experiments and exhibits exploring STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects.
More than 100 pupils at Swindon's Red Oaks Primary School in Swindon have been displaying their latest projects at the school’s annual STEM Fair.
They included:
- Pin the Part on the Heart
- The Science of Football
- Oobleck Experiment - making a substance that’s neither a solid nor a liquid
- Fireworks in a Jar
- Air Cannon
Fellow pupils have been voting for the most popular entries, with around 350 votes cast so far, and the winning teams will get a place on a trip to this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
Headteacher Eirian Painter said: “The STEM Fair is a fun and engaging event which also significantly enhances students’ learning experiences and fosters a deeper understanding of the subjects within the classroom. It’s amazing to see all the imagination that goes into the experiments and exhibits.”
Daniel Carter, a Year 4 Teacher, said: “It was so lovely to see the children full of happiness regarding their projects - their creativity has blown me away!”
Fellow Year 4 teacher Mandy Jacques said: “There is a real sense of community here today - it’s so heartwarming to see the parents just as engaged as the children are!”
Students and their parents were equally enthusiastic, with one Year 4 pupil saying: “Today was fun because I was able to be a scientist for the day. I’m definitely doing it again next year!”
Since Red Oaks school launched the annual STEM Fair, the team have seen a range of benefits including encouraging critical thinking and problem solving, promoting creativity and innovation, enhancing collaboration and teamwork, building confidence and presentation skills, inspiring lifelong interest in STEM fields and providing opportunities for parental and community involvement.
