A new Kungfu Wushu Academy is opening in Swindon at the Kingsdown School Sports Centre fitness studio, teaching local residents traditional Chinese martial arts.
Freddy Paillard, trained in France, USA and China, 4th DUAN, former competitor and former head of the Wushu development in Normandy. He arrived in UK one year ago and has been running his new academy classes since 3 May.
He won seven medals (four gold medals and three silver medals) in two competitions last November in UK. And four gold medals last January in France.
Courses are open to all levels (beginners and advanced): men, women and children. Adherents will practice Kungfu Wushu (modern and traditional, shaolin), Chinese kickboxing "Sanda" and self-defense (Jeet Kune Do).
Chinese martial arts, popularised as Kungfu or Wushu, are ancestors and the basis of other martial arts. Through his films and his method of fighting, Bruce Lee's notoriety has played an important role in the interest of the Western public for the Chinese martial arts.
In the practitioners, they allow each one to flourish both physically and mentally. Indeed, as a martial discipline, the Wushu includes practice: specific physical exercises (stances, kicks and punches), self-defence (Qinna: the art of seizures), practice "Taolu" (codified, bare-handed or weapons-based), free fighting and competition (Sanda or Chinese Kickboxing).
Apart from this purely physical aspect of its content, "Kungfu Wushu" is also a way of life and thought that allows its adept to acquire a knowledge of self and others. It helps to improve one's health, to be more serene, to overcome one's shyness and to face the vagaries of life with more objectivity.
