Fundraiser swings into action for Uplands School

Uplands School's pupils can now reach for the sky thanks to a brand new swing, paid for by the fundraising efforts of a charitable mother.

Children were delighted to see their brand new swing unveiled today at Uplands School, Tadpole Lane. The therapeutic swing is now a permanent feature on the grounds for students to enjoy.

CEO of Uplands, Fiona Clark, said: "It's important for us as many of our students have sensory needs, and it makes such a difference and helps their social skills as they can go on the swing together, and understand to take turns.

"We couldn't afford to purchase the swing ourselves with our funding, and we can't always go off site with the children so having the swing here is just fantastic, - it enriches the curriculum and adds different activities, including sports. It's great to have a range of options.

"It's been a lovely afternoon - we had the grand opening with children having a go on the swing, to now come inside and enjoy some tea and cake."

Emma Jenkins, mother of Uplands student Jamie, hosted a golf day charity event for the school's latest feature. In total she has raised over £7,000 for the school which has enabled the specialist institute to obtain music equipment, a karaoke machine, Boardman bikes, and now a swing.

She said: "I wanted to give back to the people that have helped and supported me, - Jamie loves it here - and the swing is a way to support the children when they're agitated and also to put a smile on their faces."

After having a go on the swing Sophie, a student at Uplands, said: "It makes me feel very relaxed. I like it when someone pushes me."

Emma has fundraised more than £40,000 for local charities in Swindon over the last ten years - to celebrate she will be hosting her next Golf Day in Cumberwell Park, June.
