The Wyvern Theatre will host the in the Swindon Recital Series on 13 November from 1.05pm.
Carole Hubel-Allen playing viola and Paul Turner on piano will be performing works by Shostakovich and Beethoven.
On 1 October 1975, Moscow Conservatory saw the public première of Shostakovich’s Viola sonata - seven weeks after the composer’s death.
Written in the last two months of his life, the sonata was Shostakovich’s only composition specifically for viola and piano, and has become one of the most important works in the canon for that combination of instruments.
Carole Hubel-Allen and Paul Turner will be performing the sonata along with the first movement of Beethovens Moonlight Sonata, which is referenced in the final movement of Shostakovich's sonata. Also included in the programme will be a composition from the Soviet film The Gadfly, also composed by Shostakovich, called Romance, which was used as the theme music for the television series Reilly Ace of Spies.
All adult tickets for the event are £9 (including venue levy). Students aged 15-18 £3.50. Accompanied children 14 and under will be admitted free.
Carol Hubel-Allen received her musical training at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
After a spell with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, she joined the Pfeifer String Quartet in Stuttgart, touring extensively throughout Europe, also giving recitals with piano and appearing as a soloist with orchestras in Switzerland and Germany.
During an extended stay in the US, she was invited to become a member of the Princeton Chamber Orchestra and the Chanterelle String Quartet.
More recently, she joined the Dehler String Quartet of the Staatskapelle, Weimar, and then in 2006 returned to this country where she formed the Duo Karadys and the Bochmann String Trio.
Carol holds several awards from the Royal Academy of Music and the Colmar International String Quartet Competition in France and she has made numerous radio and TV recordings and discs.
Paul Turner is an Honours graduate and an elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music where his many prizes and awards culminated in the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence and the Peter Pears Accompaniment Prize.
An experienced recitalist he has appeared at London’s leading venues and major UK festivals. He has given concerts in Europe and South America and worked with eminent singers and instrumentalists.
Swindon Recital Series was founded 31 years ago by Paul Turner, and is committed to providing world-class chamber music in the Swindon area by presenting regular concerts of chamber music given by professional musicians.
The Series takes place between September and April each year at various venues in and around Swindon, including the Wyvern Theatre and the Arts Centre.
