Amanda Wilkins delivers her verdict on what is becoming a Festive Season tradition.

The Enchanted Gardens Light Trail has returned to The Town Gardens for its fourth year.

South Swindon Parish Council promised a bigger and better light trail for Christmas 2024 and they have definitely fufilled their promise.

The Enchanted Light Trail is something Swindon should be very proud of. This was my third year attending the event and it was by far the best, they really have pulled out all the stops.

We were greeted by illuminated snowflakes which danced merrily on the path, and a symphony of festive tunes, courtesy of the brass band playing in the iconic band stand. A colourful merry-go-round and a rather jolly Father Christmas, delighted the children.

There was a variety of stalls selling Christmas beverages and delicious treats, which filled the air with a delightful, yuletide aroma.

If you are a returning visitor to the Light Trail, you will be pleased to discover an extended route with plenty of new light installations. The trail was well marked with arrows guiding us through the beautifully illuminated paths.

There are plenty of interactive lights for the young and young at heart, including a voice controlled piano, and the opportunity to become a visual D.J, by taking control of the disco ball lights.

Colour changing butterflies illuminate the grounds, and a giant, sparkly, golden present provides the perfect Christmas photo opportunity. The grand finale, which is situated in the bowl, is a stunning colour changing Christmas tree. After taking us through a jaunty yuletide rendition, which culminates in ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’, the tree magically transforms into the delightfully festive colours of red and green. There was plenty to see and we throughly enjoyed our evening.

The Enchanted Gardens Light Trail is organised and managed by South Swindon Parish Council.

A spokesperson for the event, said: “Wander through a magical backdrop of illuminated trees, discover a trail of remarkable light art sculptures, low level soundscapes, interactive illuminations and a specially commissioned light show.

“Visitors will take an immersive journey through illuminated treescapes and mesmerising light installations, and marvel at the wonderful new community projects throughout the trail.

"This year the Enchanted Gardens Light Trail is supporting Brighter Futures. All profits from the Commonweal School car park will be donated to the charity and 50% of merchandise sales will also be donated. Their volunteers will be helping us around the trail so make sure to say hello!"

This year there will be an accessible evening, which takes place on Monday 9 December, specially designed for neurodivergent people and those with sensory processing issues, where a fully accessible toilet, complete with an electric hoist and an adjustable height changing table, will be available.

If you would like to attend this evening, please contact The South Swindon Parish Council here to arrange a timeslot.

A variety of performances will be taking place over the month, including several local schools and performing arts companies. Details of these performances can be found on the website: @SouthSwindonParishCouncil

The parish council is working with a specialist light installation company, Luminism - a sub-division of Yes Events - in organising this event. Luminism have organised light trails in other parts of the country and regularly work with National Trust properties.

There is event parking available at The Commonweal School, SN1 4JE for £2.00 for the evening.  All proceeds from this will be donated to their Charity Partner, Brighter Futures.

The Enchanted Light Trail runs from Friday 29 November until Tuesday 24 December.
