West Swindon Parish Council has announced the launch of its ‘Transforming Subways’ project.
The initiative is designed to bring new local designed street art to West Swindon. Many public spaces have been covered by illegal graffiti and tagging, which can make them feel unwelcoming.
The new project aims to change that by replacing subway walls. Subways at the Rivermead Drive, Link Centre, Bodiam Drive and near Brookfield School are the first to receive this transformation.
Chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Rose Llewellyn said: “This project is about changing our everyday spaces into something special. We want to clear illegal graffiti and tags and replace them with artworks that brighten our subways and make them more inviting for everyone who uses them.
“West Swindon is blessed with an incredible network of cycle and footpaths, and these subways are used daily by local people. By adding colourful, creative works, we hope to make these spaces feel safer, more attractive, and part of our public art scene.”
Vice Chair Cllr Caryl Sydney-Smith said: “It has been great to partner with local artists. As part of the project, the Parish Council will be launching a West Swindon Art Map: Walk, Explore, Enjoy which will encourage residents to explore the newly decorated subways and sculptures dotted around the Parish. The flyer will highlight key locations and artworks, turning a simple walk or bike ride into a mini art trail experience.
“The Parish Council will continue to create and support new artworks– we hope residents enjoy seeing these pop up across the Parish.”
