Food & Drink

If you are in Swindon and love your old traditional English country pubs, then you are in luck as there are plenty of great country pubs in and around this town. With their delicious food, the best beers and ales, and relaxing atmospheres, you will have a great time if you visit them. Below I am going to take a look at what we believe to be the best country pubs in this area.

Silk on the Downs

This is a British gastro pub that is located just 15-20 minutes outside of Swindon in a small village of Ogbourne St. Andrew. This pub combines the spirit of great hospitality with horse racing, which the area is well renowned for. The Silks is very popular among locals due to the fact that it has a relaxed atmosphere, a varied menu, and a cellar with a variety of beers, ales, wines and spirits. If you have a dog, feel free to bring it along with you as dogs are more than welcome, so long as you keep them under control. When the weather is decent, there are tables outside so you can enjoy delicious food and drink in the sun. After you have eaten and drunk your fill, you can burn off some of the calories that you consumed by taking a walk in the beautiful countryside.

The Kingsdown

If you want a pub that is in Swindon, then the Kingsdown on Upper Stratton is a great choice. Take a drive or walk past this pub and you will get a good look at their wonderful garden. This pub has been around for some time now and it has become a firm favourite with the locals. You can come here for a quiet drink with friends and family and they regularly hold live music events if those are your kind of thing. As well as a variety of delicious cask ales, you can treat yourself to some traditional British pub food. If you are into your sports then you will be happy to hear that they have Sky Sports, so you can come here at the weekend to watch your favourite Premier League team play football, enjoy some horse racing when there is a big racing event on, or watch your favourite cricket stars.

I remember watching the Cricket World Cup final at this pub, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. I am Irish, but I support the England cricket team because their captain has Irish ancestry. I was sitting next to a fellow Irishman, and when the conversation of our topic turned to gambling he told me that he works for a betting comparison website in Ireland called betinireland.ie. He taught me a lot and suggested that I check the site out to find the better odds being offered by new bookmakers. We continued speaking for hours after the match, which England won, and must have tried all the craft ales they had on offer.

The Falcon Inn

This quaint gastro pub is located thirty minutes outside of Swindon in the market town of Cirencester. When the current owners bought this pub, they put in plenty of thought as to what exactly it is that makes for a great British pub. They decided that a fantastic British pub is one where the atmosphere is friendly, you can enjoy plenty of delicious beers and wines, and eat some delicious food at an affordable price. To top it all off, it should be the heart of the local community. It is fair to say that the owners have done exactly what they set out to achieve. This traditional British country pub focuses on locally brewed ales, a good variety of wines, and classic English food that will keep you coming back for more. They also buy all their produce from local producers so that they are helping fellow locals out. Whether you are coming here for a family celebration, a date night, some entertainment, or just for a cup of coffee you will be welcomed with open arms.

The Tawny Owl

This is another great pub situated within Swindon and you can find it on Taw Hill. If it is a sunny day, this is one of the best places in town to come to quench your thirst and satiate your hunger. There are plenty of tables located outside, so even if it is busy there is a good chance that you will be able find a free table for you and whoever you are with. As well as live music, they also have Sky Sports and BT Sports so you can watch all your favourite sports (football, horse racing, cricket, and rugby) while enjoying your favourite beers, ales, and wine. If you have kids, then you can bring them along with you and they can let off a little steam in the play area.

The White Hart

Whether you are looking for a place to have an evening pint or a cooling soft drink in the afternoon, the newly decked terrace at the White Hart on Oxford Road in Swindon is the perfect place for you to unwind with family and friends. They also have BT Sports and Sky Sports, so you can relax with your favourite beverages and while watching all of your favourite sports. For added entertainment you can have a game of pool with your mates or make use of the skittle alley. Once you have worked up an appetite, you can satisfy your hunger with some great British pub food. There is also a function room, so if you have an anniversary, birthday, or wedding reception then you might want to consider having it at The White Hart. You and your guests will certainly have a night to remember.
