Four days of Bengali tradition, cultural performances, family celebrations and community spirit will bring people together at Supermarine Sports Club from 18 to 21 October.

Swindon is preparing to welcome one of its most vibrant celebrations of South Asian culture as SHAROD, a registered charitable organisation (Charity No. 1213879), celebrates the 10th year of its Durga Puja festivities from 18 to 21 October 2026 at Supermarine Sports Club, Swindon, SN3 4BZ.

Marking a decade of bringing people together through culture, faith and community engagement, SHAROD Durga Puja promises four days of devotion, traditional celebrations, cultural entertainment and opportunities for families and friends to connect. The organisers are inviting people from Swindon and the surrounding areas to join the festivities and experience the warmth, colour and spirit of one of the most significant celebrations in the Bengali cultural calendar.

For SHAROD, Durga Puja is much more than an annual event. It is a celebration of identity, heritage and belonging - a chance to bring generations together while sharing the richness of Bengali traditions with the wider community.

Celebrating a decade of tradition and togetherness

Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals in Bengali culture, celebrating Goddess Durga and symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Across communities worldwide, the festival brings people together through worship, music, dance, food and shared traditions.

Over the years, SHAROD Durga Puja has grown into one of the largest community-led Bengali cultural celebrations in the region, welcoming around 1,500 visitors each year. A key feature of the event is its spirit of inclusivity and hospitality, with free traditional food (Bhog and community meals) served to all visitors throughout the celebrations. This longstanding tradition reflects SHAROD's commitment to bringing people together, fostering community connections, and ensuring that everyone can participate in the festivities regardless of background.

For the SHAROD community, this year's celebrations carry particular significance as the organisation marks its 10th year of hosting Durga Puja in Swindon.

Over the years, the event has developed into an important gathering for South Asian families, helping preserve cultural traditions while creating a welcoming space for people of different backgrounds to come together.

At the heart of SHAROD's mission is a commitment to ensuring that Bengali heritage remains alive for future generations.

"Our Puja is not just an event; it is a true experience of togetherness, heritage and devotion. Durga Puja is a way for us to preserve our rich heritage and Bengali culture and, most importantly, pass it on to the next generation.

"Through these celebrations, we want to create an environment where our children and young people can learn about their roots, experience our traditions first-hand and develop a lasting connection with their cultural identity."

This commitment to cultural education and community participation makes the festival particularly meaningful for younger generations growing up in Britain, offering them an opportunity to understand and celebrate their heritage while embracing the diversity of modern British society.

Four days of festivities for the whole community

The celebrations will take place over four days, with a programme combining traditional religious ceremonies, cultural activities and opportunities for socialising.

The festivities begin on Sunday, 18 October, with Maha Shashthi, featuring the opening Puja at 2pm, Pushpanjali at 4pm and a cultural programme at 6pm.

On Monday, 19 October, celebrations will continue with Maha Saptami and Maha Ashtami. The programme includes traditional Puja ceremonies, Kalabou Boron, Pushpanjali, Kanjak and Sandhi Puja, followed by Bhog distribution.

Tuesday, 20 October, will feature Maha Nabami, with Puja beginning at 3pm, followed by Yagna, Pushpanjali and a special evening programme starting at 6.30pm. Bhog distribution is scheduled for 8.45pm.

The festival concludes on Wednesday, 21 October, with Bijoya Dashami, featuring Puja, Sindoor Khela and an evening of Dhamaail, Dhunuchi and Garba celebrations. The programme will conclude with the Bijoya Dashami dinner at 8.30pm.

Alongside the religious ceremonies, the cultural programme will provide an opportunity to celebrate music, dance and artistic expression, bringing together people of different ages and backgrounds.

A free shuttle service to and from Supermarine Sports Club is also planned to help visitors travel to and from the venue.

With a welcoming atmosphere and activities centred on culture, devotion and community, the organisers hope the celebrations will appeal not only to Bengali and wider South Asian families but also to anyone interested in discovering new cultural experiences.

A celebration with a wider community purpose

Beyond the festivities, SHAROD's work reflects a broader commitment to building connections and supporting the local community.

The organisation, whose name stands for Swindon Holistic Association for Religious and Optimistic Development, is dedicated to preserving and promoting South Asian cultural heritage through inclusive cultural, religious and humanitarian initiatives.

Its activities extend beyond Durga Puja to include celebrations and community events such as Jagaddhatri Puja, Holi, picnics, Pohela Boishakh and programmes commemorating Rabindra Jayanti and Nazrul Jayanti.

By bringing people together through these activities, SHAROD aims to encourage mutual understanding, cultural appreciation and a stronger sense of belonging.

The annual Durga Puja celebration also provides a platform for local businesses, community organisations and supporters to engage with residents and contribute to a shared cultural experience.

The organisers welcome interest from businesses and organisations wishing to support the event through sponsorship, exhibition stalls and other forms of partnership.

Such involvement can help local businesses connect with festival visitors while contributing to the continuation of community-led cultural activities.

An invitation to Swindon and beyond

As SHAROD prepares for this milestone year, the message from the organisers is simple: everyone is welcome.

Whether visitors are familiar with Durga Puja, are part of the Bengali diaspora, or are simply curious to experience a vibrant cultural celebration, the event offers an opportunity to discover the traditions, stories and community spirit that make the festival so special.

For families, it is a chance to celebrate together and introduce children to their cultural heritage. For young people, it offers a connection to traditions that span generations. For newcomers, it provides an opportunity to meet people, experience Bengali culture and become part of a welcoming community gathering.

The 10th anniversary is also an opportunity to recognise the volunteers, families, supporters and partners whose contributions have helped SHAROD sustain its celebrations over the past decade.

As the organisation looks to the future, it hopes to continue building a community where culture is celebrated, traditions are passed on and people from different backgrounds can come together in a spirit of friendship and understanding.

With four days of religious observance, cultural performances, traditional festivities and community engagement planned, SHAROD Durga Puja 2026 promises to be a memorable occasion for Swindon.

Residents across Swindon and the surrounding areas are warmly invited to join SHAROD in celebrating its 10th year of Durga Puja and experience the colours, traditions, flavours and spirit of Bengali culture.
