From Flog IT to SHOUTING softly in Swindon there's plenty to do throughout May at Steam.

SHOUTING softly Swindon is a free event, held online on 7 May, aimed at female empowerment for ages 14-25.

The community arts project aims to help young women in the town develop their creativity, research skills and build community.

On 10 May the award-winning Aldbourne Band will be joining forces with the Door Samenwerking Sterk Fanfare Orchestra from the Netherlands for an evening of live music.

The following day sees the return of popular event Meet the Railway Workers. It is hosted by Steam’s friendly and knowledgeable volunteers and this activity is brilliant fun for all the family.

A spokesperson said: "You’ll have the opportunity to get onto the footplate of No4073 Caerphilly Castle, 3717 City of Truro, No 6000 King George V and No. 2818!" There will also be a guided tour of Steam. This event is free to Steam Season Ticket holders.

TV antiques expert Paul Martin will be sharing his knowledge and experience with Swindon residents on Monday 13 May when he hosts a free community valuation day at Steam. The valuation day, which is being run in partnership with world renowned Devizes auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son, for which Paul is Head of Valuations, will run from 10am to 3pm.

Dr Mike Esbester from the University of Portsmouth will be discussing working and dying on Britain’s railways between 1900 and 1939 on 20 May.

All are welcome to attend the free talk, although a small donation to the Friends of Swindon Railway Museum would be appreciated.

GWR What’s Your Emergency is a series of exhibitions highlighting the emergency services, including Police, Fire and Ambulance and the importance of these organisations on the railway.

In collaboration with the brand-new exhibition, families are invited to come and handle fascinating objects from the Education Handling Collection associated with the Emergency Services on 29 May.

The spokesperson said: "Dress up as a GWR police officer, complete with a GWR truncheon, or a WW2 nurse looking after injured soldiers travelling on a hospital train.

"Pretend to put out a fire with our stirrup pump or scoop sand onto a flaming incendiary bomb. The half term event is included in the admission fee."
