Children and parents have been learning a new language through the power of stories.

The ‘Story Sack’ programme, run by the Council’s Warm Welcome Team, is a way for residents in Swindon to learn English by reading the same story in English and their native language, then creating a bag filled with toys, clothes and teddy bears relating to that story for children to then use.

According to the National Literacy Trust, “A story sack is a collection of items in a bag or container that can be used to support and extend the telling of a story.

“Story sacks have the power to ignite children’s imaginations. They can make stories more accessible to everyone, including children for whom English is not their first language, and children with additional needs or disabilities.

“Story sacks will encourage interactions and communication, enhance children’s vocabulary and language and support children with their own storytelling and role play.”

Over the past few months, those taking part have been working hard to create the colourful and creative story sacks which will be given to local schools in the coming months.
