A photograph of The Bathers - a sculpture by Jon Buck - is one of over 5,500 Swindon images available online thanks to the Local Studies Team at the Central Library.

The Bathers was first unveiled in December of 1985 at the Westlea Park play area.

The sculpture itself was supposedly influenced by a consultation with local residents and followed the artist's figurative theme (statues of people) as well as his style of ‘naked not nude’.

As the sculpture was installed in December, it was covered in Christmas wrapping paper before it was unveiled.

The work now sits in the green space next to the West Swindon District Centre.

The image shown here comes courtesy of Swindon Borough Council's Local Studies team, whose resources covering the history of the town, including photographs, can be viewed at #swindonphotos.

The Local Studies collection for the Borough of Swindon can be found on the second floor of Central Library.  The staff are happy to support people with local history or family history enquiries.

Since 2010 the council has hosted and run the Swindon & District History Network, connecting dozens of local history groups, local historians and heritage institutions.
