The Wessex are inviting the public to attend an open evening event this September to find out more about their group, and meet the current members.

The open evening will be held at the Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club on 13 September, at 7pm.

The Wessex (formerly known as 'The Wessex Male Choir') is an amateur men’s choir based in Swindon, founded in 2001.

The choir say they take their name from the ancient kingdom of Wessex, an area of England comprised of what are now the counties of Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset and Somerset, ruled by King Alfred.

This association can be found in the choir’s logo which features a wyvern - the legendary two-legged dragon featured in the flag of Wessex.

As the rugby season is almost here, and with the six nations tournament is just around the corner, the Wessex thought the location of choice of the RWB Rugby Club for the event, very apt.

Administration Manager David Langley said: "Whichever is your team, do you have a hankering to sing your favourite rugby song properly? Bashing out Swing low, Bread of Heaven, Flower of Scotland or whatever, in harmony can only earn you the respect of your fellow supporters. So if you want to tell your arias from your elbow, our event will provide you with this opportunity."

Attendees are invited to learn their favourite songs, and enjoy the good natured rivalry that the choir say is sure to follow.

The Wessex’s long list of competition successes marks it as one of the most successful male ensembles of the 21st century.

David added: "We take our singing seriously as evidenced by our competitive successes, but we take ourselves less seriously. We have one member who fancied being a professional comedian, and about 50 others who think they should be.

"So, if you want to develop and hone your singing whilst also having a good time, you know where to be this September. See you there."
