The new owners of the Check Inn, Wroughton have emphasised their desire to bring a local focus back to the establishment.
Sharon Johnson took over the Check Inn in late November 2016 and has since overseen its transformation from Thai restaurant back to being a community pub with a local focus.
This is especially evident in their choice of suppliers, with all the ingredients for the rustic menu coming from connections within Swindon. In fact, the eggs and dairy products barely travel over a mile to get to the pub.
Sharon said: “The links with our suppliers is key to what we are trying to do here. For instance, we would rather pay more to have our vegetables come to us from across the road than have them prepackaged and frozen. We scrub and hand cut all our chips and if we aren’t able to get certain ingredients because of seasonal constraints, we ask the supplier for their recommendation for an alternative.
“It’s almost a back to basics approach, a more old fashioned offering to the community and it seems to be working. We’ve had lots of people come in telling us how much they needed a proper pub again. It’s been manic, but really good.
“We’ve got plans to really expand upon this idea, so we will be bringing music back to the pub, we are opening all day, every day instead of closing in the afternoons, we will be doing a beer and cider festival, quizzes, all the things you’d expect but done with our own style.
The pub aims to appeal to the growing Wichelstowe area as well as the existing communities in Wroughton and the surrounding areas.
