Public Health officials are urging parents to take up the free child flu vaccine in Swindon as data shows take-up across the town is low.

More than 4,300 children aged two and three in Swindon have not yet been vaccinated as national monitoring shows that flu is starting circulate ahead of the festive holidays.

Children are offered the flu vaccine as a nasal spray, which means no injections, and the spray has been shown to be highly effective at reducing illness in children caused by circulating flu strains.

Flu is very common in young children and babies and can be very unpleasant with some going on to develop complications such a bronchitis and pneumonia requiring hospital treatment.

Children are also targeted for the vaccine around Christmas time when families get together. Children can be ‘super spreaders’ of flu and are likely to infect more vulnerable older family members.

Parents and carers can take up the free offer via their GP surgery.

Dr Ayo Oyinloye, Director of Public Health at Swindon Borough Council, said: Flu is highly infectious and is easily spread at this time of year. The nasal spray is safe, quick and painless and will protect your child and your family during this festive period.

“Your GP has plenty of vaccine supply so don’t delay and make an appointment today.”
